Learning Adventure Reboot!
As February 2020 came to an end, our team was feeling energized from our “tribal council”, the creation of our “Learning Adventure App Store”, and another day of cross-district collaboration. At that time, we did not know that our plans for a Learning Adventure would be upended by the COVID-19 health crisis.
When we left school, we had voted to take on the “Leaving a Legacy” Learning Adventure in which we would plant and cultivate a flower and vegetable garden to benefit a local homeless shelter. We are excited that our team voted in favor of an experience that not only promoted learning but would also make an impact on our community.

Planting our Learning Adventure Garden
Despite the challenges of the school closure and social distancing, in June we rebooted our Learning Adventure, determined to find a way to leave a legacy through our learning. Our team reconvened to continue our work in a remote format by picking up packs of seeds and planting their gardens at home.
Then, in July the team signed up to visit garden beds in the courtyard at Miscoe Hill School. The team planted more than 1000 square feet of garden beds with vegetables that could be harvested and donated to a local shelter in order to support our community at a time when our community is especially in need. |
Beyond learning through the experience of planting, cultivating, and harvesting - this Learning Adventure also provided students with the chance to collaborate, problem-solve, and express themselves creatively - including designing kindness rocks to artistic crop markers to garden stones.
The next phase of the adventure will focus not only on making an impact but also on exploring an inquiry. Students will have the chance to consider aspects of the garden that align with their curiosities. In the next phase of our Learning Adventure, the team will reassemble to tap into their interests. Topics such as soil composition, nutrients, photo journalism, cookbooks, community engagement, food insecurity, greenhouse technology and so much more can be explored through the project.
